GETTING
BACK TO REALITY!
By
Sandi Winter
Things are starting to get back
to normal for us at Southern Harmony Chorus after competition. We are still excited
about winning our second place small chorus medal - the first medal in our 11-year
history! We're still reliving the experience. We owe our success to our director,
Tom Nawrocki, who makes us strive to do our best and for the implementation, last
year, of a new taping program. A big thank you to Cheri Danner, who "tweaked"
our sound at our annual retreat. We are also so proud of our quartet, Carolina
Gold, who won a third place quartet medal at competition.
We had a successful membership drive at a local mall in April, which brought several new faces to our rehearsals. The chorus is looking forward to several scheduled performances where we can show off our medals. Our Music Team is preparing some new music for us so we will be "retiring" a lot of our current repertoire - they keep us on our toes and always learning. We'll be to get this year going as soon as our feet hit the ground!
HILTON HEAD SHORE NOTES

The Hilton Head Shore Notes are winding down after
a very successful show, "Sing and Celebrate the USA," held May 6. In
addition to a musical tour of our country with such songs as "Let's Get Away
From it All", "42nd Street", "Moon Over Miami", and "San
Francisco Bay Blues," we had two guest quartets. Joining us were Jackpot,
the 6th place International winners in Detroit, and our own Region 14 3rd place
Carolina Gold
We were also proud to have Carolyn Belgrad, Region 14 Financial
Coordinator, and Tom Nawrocki, director of Southern Harmony, join us for the evening's
festivities. Thanks to everyone for their support and good wishes.
We are looking forward to attracting new members with guest nights in May. If any of you are near the Hilton Head area and would like to join us, we meet on Monday nights at 7PM at the Island Lutheran Church.
VIENNA-FALLS
CHORUS

"Double Medalists!" In the Vienna-Falls Chorus we can still hear the members shouting these words of joy! We are thrilled to be Region 14's second place medalists and first place mid-size chorus medalists. Sound Advice from V-F also came home with 5th place quartet medals. They are triple medalists! We send warm congratulations to our northern Virginia sisters, Potomac Harmony Chorus and also to Southern Yankees quartet as they prepare for International competition!
Our own Rita Hull, a member of the International Board of Directors, recently installed V-F's new management team. Installed were Anne Rhome, Team Coordinator; Betty Anderson, Chorus Manager; Martie Gilliam, Secretary; Lois Sady, Financial Manager; Susan Inge, Membership Manager; Cathie Grant, Music Manager; Elsie Bartlett, Visual Manager and Carolyn O'Connell, Communications Manager. We give our warm "thanks" to retiring members Carol Kaltenbaugh, Carolyn Williams and Molly Sproles for their years of dedication and service.
Also at our installation, the new Sweet Adeline of the Year (SAY) was announced! Bonnie Ashley won this coveted award! Bonnie is a long time member of the chorus, a member of the costume team, our bass section leader and bass of Sound Advice quartet. Congratulations, Bonnie!
CAROLINA
CONNECTION

Carolina Connection
has been trying to take it easy since competition. Susan Wells has been working
on getting her voice back to normal since she started having problems in January.
After trying everything her regular doctor suggested, she has now gone to a throat
specialist. So far no "miracle cure", but we're all hopeful she'll be
able to find the cause of her vocal problems and make them go away!
In
the meantime, we have had a couple of performances, including one with Bar None
quartet (as the "Carolina Bar Association") in Tryon, NC. As you may
know, Tryon isn't a very large town. After we finished our performance around
9 PM, we looked for a place to go for dinner before the almost 2-hour drive home.
Even on a Friday night, about all we could find open was a Denny's restaurant
in a near-by town. Needless to say, we were just a bit overdressed, in long dresses
and the guys in their nice suits. We like to think we added a touch of class to
Denny's that night - and of course we had to sing some 8-part harmony for them!
Other than that, we are enjoying learning some new music, polishing old repertoire
songs, and planning summer vacations. We are also looking forward to Music Camp
next month. Hope to see you there!
