What they’re saying…
Listen to what a few chorus members from around the region and country have to say about being in organizations like ours:
"Sweet Adelines has been a major part of my life for 43 years (joined in PA when I was a mere child!). My children and now my grandchildren have followed me every year to every competition and now are avid barbershoppers. Can't imagine what my life would have been like without it!!!" Loretta Bell, Carolina Style Chorus
"Being a Sweet Adeline allows me to share my love of music with not only a wide selection of interesting women, but also with my community. The skills I am learning and implementing musically are promoting a better singer in other forums. The support and love of my sisters-in-song is a resource on which I rely. I never want to be without Heart of Columbia Chorus, Region 14 and SAI. I'm hooked, but good." Lu Smith, Heart of Columia Chorus
"Music has always been a big part of my life: singing, directing, playing piano, etc. Health issues turned my life upside down and my music had to stop. When my health was better, I saw an article in the newspaper inviting ladies to a meeting to talk about starting a SA Chorus. I went to that meeting August 2003 and have been a member ever since. Singing with this group of women put the joy of music back into my life. For 3 hours on Tuesdays, I didn't have a chance to think about any problems, healthwise or otherwise, because I had to totally concentrate on notes and words. No medicine could do for me what this music did for me. Still today, when I'm in the MRI, CT scan, or even lying on the physical therapist's table being 'tortured', I visualize myself on the risers singing a favorite song and it gets me through the procedure. I used to be an only child.....now I have a whole bunch of sisters!! I love the ladies, I love the music, I love the fact that my husband completely supports me in this hobby and is called a 'groupie' by some of the singers. Oh, and may I say, I love the feeling of winning 2 medals at competition under the direction of Nancy Field!! Thanks to my chorus, the region, and Sweet Adelines, I now have the magic of music to fill my life with joy again. Thanks, Peggy James, for your vision to start a chorus in Greenville." Carolyn Tant, Greenville In Harmony Chorus "The friends I have made through Sweet Adelines and my home chorus, are people who understand the joy that music brings to our lives and I wouldn't trade them for anything in the world." Betsy Smith, Virginia Coast Chorus
"My story is that I joined SAI when we lived in Oklahoma. When it was determined that we would be moving to Richmond, my hubby and I came for a house hunting trip. Given that we were moving teenagers, we spent the first day visiting schools. That evening I visited the chorus. THEN we started house hunting!!" Anita McLarin, Greater Richmond Chorus
"I love singing barbershop because: I live to sing, it's challenging, there's always something new to learn and a technique to master, the camaraderie is fabulous, and performing is exhilarating and rewarding." Iris Christ, Southern Harmony Chorus
“I enjoy the fun and fellowship of the ladies, and the beautiful music. Many of the members in my group I have known for years and feel comfortable singing with them. I consider my time with them to be much needed therapy!” |
