An SLP's Guide to Vocal WarmUp
Every singer knows the importance of vocal warmup, but few of us use these techniques when preparing to sing on our own. In rehearsal, we warm up to prepare to sing for three hours; but in personal practice time, quartet rehearsals, or independent sectionals, we jump right into singing without doing a proper vocal warmup, then feel frustrated or discouraged when our voices get tired in a shorter time and don't have the range or quality we know we are capable of. This leads to unhealthy tension and strain in our practice habits.
So why do we warm up?
Without the structure of a warm-up team, or the leadership of the director, we often don't know what to do or where to start. Also, we like to sing, and want to get to the fun part!
This interactive class will explore quick and easy warm-up strategies you can do on your own to keep your voice healthy and build vocal efficiency in your practice. We will also learn a quick progression of exercises to ensure you warm up all aspects of healthy singing, including breathing, range, resonance, and intervals. We will discuss ways to incorporate your chorus or quartet music into the warmup so you can "get to the fun part" faster (and more safely).
Regional Mass Sing music will be incorporated to demonstrate these strategies. So grab your straw, and join in the fun!
